Who doesn’t want healthy, glowing, radiant skin, right?! But do we know how to achieve this? And more importantly, How to maintain it?
Beautiful, glowing skin is a reflection of good health which can be achieved with the right lifestyle practices and skincare habits.
Glowing skin has a smooth texture and hence, able to reflect the light to give you that luminous appearance. So, how do we achieve a smooth skin surface? Whether your priority is to banish blemishes or refining those enlarged pores, there are a few good habits you can adopt to help….Let’s get back to basics:
Firstly, follow a skincare routine that works for you, whether it’s a solid 3 step cleanse, tone & moisture twice a day, or an exfoliating cleanse in the shower, it doesn’t have to be a tedious 7 step process. In fact, with skincare innovation accelerating rapidly in todays market, you can opt for a more ‘skinamalistic’ approach and use hybrid products that offer multiple benefits, saving both time and money. Whatever your routine, stick to it, everyday to see results. Consistency is key.
- Cleanse. Twice a day – morning & night. Clean skin is always the first step in any skincare routine. Cleansing removes dirt, excess oil, make-up and dead skin cells.
- Exfoliate. This is imperative to glowing skin. Quick skin overview; skin cell turnover is the process of producing new skin cells to replace existing ones. During the skincare renewal process, cells move up from the deepest subcutaneous layer of the skin, through the dermis and finally to the top layer of the skin (known as the epidermis) and rests on skins surface.
Everyday, your skin is exposed to damage, through UV rays, wind pollution, dust and bacteria, amongst other sources. This causes skin cells to harden and eventually die. These dead skin cells sit on the surface of your skin giving a dull appearance and clog pores leading to pigmentation and blemishes if not removed.
On average it takes an estimated 40 – 56 days for your epidermis to completely turnover, but this timeline only lengthens as we age with it taking longer to replace old cells with new ones. Also, it is important to note as we get older, our skin does not naturally shed dead skin cells effectively on its own and requires our intervention to mechanically do this job. So the long and short of it is, Exfoliate! Ideally once a week – Fresh skin is radiant skin!
- Increase Antioxidant intake. Antioxidants offer multiple Health & skin benefits, in fact, you can never have too many! Powerful blends of nutrients can slow down the ageing process, promote brightness, soothe & heal the skin. Some great sources are Omegas 3 & 6, Green Tea, Broccoli, Kale, spinach, carrots, berries, avocados and oranges. If you’ve ever heard the expression, eat the rainbow, this is why! They work from the inside out to nourish & protect all layers of the skin, preventing the damaging effects of pollution, keeping your skin resilient, strong and radiant.
- Stay Hydrated. We’ve heard it a million times, but honestly, this is the easiest, cheapest way to great skin. Drinking enough water benefits the skin in so many ways, from flushing out toxins and preventing dehydration, to fighting blemishes; water is a miracle drink! Of course, other than increasing moisture levels on the inside, hydrating moisturisers & serums will help plump the skin for that dewy complexion too. A super hero ingredient to look out for is Hyaluronic acid. We naturally produce this in our bodies and its main function is to retain water, and impressively each molecule holds up to 1000 times its own weight in moisture! Roughly 50% of our Hyaluronic acid is in our skin, reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, resulting in a plumped, smoother skin surface. Remember, a smoother skin is a glowing skin!
